V&A Museum – Deputy Finance Director

The V&A is the world’s greatest museum of art and design with over 2.2 million items in the Museum’s collections.

The V&A Museum family of museums comprises of the V&A South Kensington, its principle location, the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, and the recently opened V&A Dundee. The Archive of Art and Design, the Theatre and Performance Study Room and the new Clothworkers’ Centre for the Study and Conservation of Textiles and Fashion are located at Blythe House, Kensington Olympia.

        Brief/Problem

In 2016, as the Museum embarked on a major project to create a new purpose-built underground gallery for the V&A’s internationally renowned programme of temporary exhibitions (a magnificent publicly-accessible courtyard space and a new entrance from Exhibition Road on the west side of the Museum), Allen Lane were engaged to recruit a critical position.

The V&A museum sought an exceptional Deputy Finance Director to become the figure-head for the finance team during a thoroughly exciting period of change. We were looking for a candidate to play a key role with ambitious change programmes as well as hold the relationship with the Finance, Investment and Audit Trustee committees. Working with the Director of Finance & Resources (https://www.allenlane.co.uk/vamuseum/), the candidate needed to ensure that Trustees were kept up to date and was also responsible for ensuring the effective management of financial and business planning across the organisation, including financial accounting, management accounting and capital projects.

        Approach/research

Our client was looking to attract the very best candidates for these critical posts. They needed to be a fully qualified accountant with a proactive approach, a flexible communication style and a genuine passion for international development and the fantastic work BBC Media Action do.

Our approach was to proactively target candidates from a Big 4 background or coming from one of the top 20 audit firms.

        Results/achievement

Sourcing into roles which have historically been difficult to fill, we were pleased to fill all roles and two of the successful candidates were referrals.
