As a newly created department with responsibilities for business, industrial strategy, science, innovation, energy, and climate change, they have ambitious plans that will be delivered by the department and its 46 agencies and public bodies. They have a strong sense of public purpose and our bold objectives include delivering an ambitious Industrial Strategy; maximising investment opportunities and bolstering UK interests; promoting competitive markets and responsible business practices and ensuring the UK has a reliable, low cost and clean energy system.
BEIS is focused on making sure that finance is at the heart of decision making; protecting value through robust stewardship of, and accounting for, public money; adding value through insightful analysis that is respected by decision makers; improving value through professional advice that increases the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s programme of work and valuing their people through the development of their skills, capability and careers.
For this particular campaign (our 5th permanent campaign for BIS / BEIS), the Department was seeking 11 finance professionals across six different areas within the finance team.
We were retained to manage the campaign in order to recruit a pool of future talent for the organisation after the merger between BIS and DECC. They were not only looking for specific technical ability but also ambition, a desire to drive best practice, and supporting new ways of thinking within the merged environment.
We took a targeted approach, and were devoted to recruiting candidates with Big 4 or NAO experience; or those from large, complex public or private sector organisations.
Over 75% of candidates that interviewed were deemed ‘appointable’, and our successful campaign resulted in Allen Lane being chosen to recruit for additional Grade 7 & Grade 6 positions. Without our understanding of BEIS (developed over a number of years), we would be arguably less effective as a partner.
