The Security Industry Authority engaged Allen Lane to undertake the recruitment for both an interim and permanent Head of Legal Services & Policy. This position represents the highest legal leadership role within the organisation.
Our task was not only to identify individuals possessing the requisite skills and experience but also those who demonstrated strong leadership capabilities to effectively oversee the legal function and collaborate with senior stakeholders, both within and outside the organisation.
We faced an exceptionally tight timeline for the fixed-term contract, given the Security Industry Authority’s imperative need for a candidate to assume the role within just three months from campaign launch. This required us to keep the position posted for only a two-week window before commencing the shortlisting, interview, and appointment phases. Typically, roles at this level involve longer timescales to comprehensively survey the market and afford candidates ample time for interview and assessment preparation.
Effective preparation is paramount for a successful campaign, and we demonstrated our adaptability by swiftly aligning with the promised timeline. Within a week, our operations team collaborated closely with HR to create a comprehensive candidate pack, furnishing all essential details about the role and the organisation. Given the limited two-week window for vetting candidates and collecting their complete applications, we initiated a strategic headhunting plan right from the outset to maximise our efficiency. In addition to our meticulous headhunting process, we promptly connected with our extensive network of senior Lawyers within the public sector in the initial days of the campaign’s launch.
The six-month contract duration presented a unique challenge, as we required a candidate who could either start immediately or had a short notice period. Furthermore, the upper limit of the salary band capped at £83,000, which added complexity considering the seniority and experience criteria. To address these obstacles, we adopted a dual strategy that combined both reactive and proactive elements. Specifically, we honed in on candidates who were readily available or nearing the end of their current contracts.
In overcoming the salary constraint, we underscored the compelling aspects of the role and highlighted the outstanding benefits offered by the civil service. This approach made the opportunity more appealing, resulting in a diverse pool of applicants from both the public and private sectors.
The SIA was highly impressed with the calibre of candidates on our shortlist and our swift response. Allen Lane successfully secured an outstanding Solicitor with a background in both government and senior leadership positions in the private sector. This candidate’s immediate availability, coupled with their prior security clearance, expedited the onboarding process, allowing them to commence their role as scheduled.
