As the only charity in Wandsworth and the surrounding boroughs, Paul’s supports people regardless of their type of cancer, and provides a wide range of services which allows people to access help in many different ways and which are tailored to suit the needs of each individual. They have supported over 20,000 people since their inception and because they are a small, independent charity, they are able to be flexible and innovative in developing new responsive services delivered by people with professional knowledge and expertise.
The client were looking for a permanent, part-time chief executive to take over from an interim who had been in place since December 2019 and who had overseen the recruitment of six new trustees to the Board and a new fundraising manager. The Centre has six staff who work on a permanent, part-time basis, as well as volunteers, and so the new chief executive would need to possess good interpersonal skills and be able to interact with a wide variety of people.
They needed an inspirational leader who would help raise the organisation’s profile with key external stakeholders and donors, and ensure strong performance from the senior team. They would possess strong commercial acumen and income generation experience, understand charity governance and ideally have experience of cancer service provision. They would also need to live in good commutable distance to the Centre.
We utilised our broad networks across the charity sector and created and oversaw a targeted media campaign; this resulted in us being able to provide the client with a broad and diverse long list of candidates in what was ultimately a very small field of relevant candidates.
This recruitment campaign kicked off and concluded all during full lockdown and so was performed entirely remotely. This added an extra layer of logistical complexity to the campaign, but by utilising video technology and maintaining a flexible approach and a strong hold throughout the process, we ensured a successful outcome.
The new chief executive will start in August 2020, and they possess all the requirements for the role, including experience of cancer service provision which was not essential.
