Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust – Financial Control Team

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICH) provides acute and specialist healthcare in north west London for around a million and a half people every year. Formed in 2007, they are one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, with nearly 11,000 staff.

        Brief/Problem

Due to the size and scale of the Trust, ICH has a large and diverse finance department. Within the Financial Control team, there had been significant turnover in 2018/19 meaning that a number of roles had become vacant. Although interim solutions had been in place for some time to fill most of the gaps, ICH felt it was time to recruit permanent staff into their Financial Control team and to have employees on board who could make an impact in their roles, and to the Trust, long-term.

        Approach/research

There were five roles to be filled in total including Head of Financial Accounts (Band 8b), Technical Accountant (Band 8a), Senior Financial Accountant x 2 (Band 7) and Assistant Financial Accountant (Band 4). Due to the number of roles and the range of experience required, we decided to support the Trust by initiating a multi-faceted recruitment campaign where we launched a dedicated microsite and proactively utilised our network to attract a diverse pool of candidates including accomplished NHS professionals, as well as relevant candidates from the wider public and commercial sectors.

Throughout the process we worked closely with the Associate Director of Finance and Head of Financial Control to understand exactly what they were looking to add to their team, and to consult and support them every step of the way. By managing the campaign exclusively, we were able to send out key messages to the market and potential candidates about the Trust, the vacancies and why ICH was an appealing NHS Trust to be a part of.

        Results/achievement

The recruitment process was a success and we found ourselves in a position where there were multiple appointable candidates. The five candidates who were offered the roles came from a range of backgrounds including the NHS, central government, local authorities and the private sector. We worked hard to ensure that the preferred candidates across the five different roles accepted their offers and were on-boarded smoothly. We are very proud of the results we achieved and even after completing the campaign, we have continued to support the hiring managers and candidates whilst they settle into their new roles.
