Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust – Finance roles

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a centre of excellence for children’s healthcare which offers the widest range of care in the UK.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, the largest centre in the UK for children and young people with heart or brain problems, and the largest centre in Europe for children and young people with cancer. The hospital receives over 255,000 patient visits a year, carries our approximately 18,800 operations each year and employs over 4,000 employees.

        Brief/Problem

GOSH are renowned for delivering excellent, specialist services and the Financial Management team play a key part in supporting clinical and corporate divisions to achieve this. In recent times, the Head of Financial Management identified that the Finance Business Partners were stretched and felt that a small restructure was needed in order for the Finance Business Partners to really integrate themselves into the services and make a real impact in their roles. The restructure, creation of new roles and changes in the team meant that there were two Band 8b Finance Business Partner and two Band 7 Assistant Finance Manager vacancies to recruit for.

        Approach/research

Within the Financial Management team there are employees who have a wealth of NHS experience and therefore in order to diversify the team, GOSH were particularly interested in attracting candidates from the commercial sector and candidates who may not necessarily apply on NHS Jobs.

This requirement meant that alongside utilising our NHS network, we had to be proactive in our approach to attract a diverse pool of candidates from outside of the sector. We have a strong track record of placing individuals from the private sector into the public sector and on this occasion, we attracted the desired candidates through launching a dedicated interactive microsite and by proactively headhunting potential candidates with transferable experience. By managing the campaign exclusively, we were able to send out key messages to the market about the Trust, the Financial Management team and why GOSH was an appealing NHS Trust to be a part of.

        Results/achievement

The recruitment process was a success and we found ourselves in a position where there were multiple appointable candidates for each role. The four preferred candidates who were offered and accepted the roles came from a range of backgrounds including the commercial sector, the charities sector and the NHS. We are very proud of the results we achieved and hope to partner again in the future with this excellent Trust.
