        Dacorum Borough Council – Assistant Director: Performance, People and Innovation

        Dacorum Borough Council is the local authority for Dacorum, the non-metropolitan district of England. Dacorum is located in the north-west of Hertfordshire, in the East of England region. The Council itself is based in Hemel Hempstead, the largest settlement in the district.

        Dacorum Borough Council has worked hard to respond to financial and operational challenges in recent years and have put culture and innovation at the heart of their approach. They recognise the important role that digital services play in helping reshape the relationship between the Council and its customers.

        Brief/Problem

        We were tasked with recruiting an Assistant Director: Performance, People and Innovation to ensure the Council continues its journey to service excellence. We were looking for a candidate who was unafraid to challenge existing ideas and practices but also understand how to support and engage to get the best out of people. A clear and confident communicator, the candidate need to be able to build relationships with elected Members, senior officers and a range of internal and external stakeholders.

        Approach/research

        This was always going to be a challenging recruit. The location, role (HR and IT are not natural bed-fellows) etc – and as such, we would leave no stone unturned. We scoured our extensive existing database for suitable candidates, through referrals from clients and a dedicated microsite and external adverts to attract potential, actively seeking candidates.

        We then vetted and interviewed all longlisted candidates, and produced a strong shortlist of appointable candidates which we presented to our client.

        Results/achievement

        All of the top four candidates who interviewed for this role were technically able and appointable. The new incumbent was sourced from the Mouchel Group, and is making a massive success of the role, bringing her blend of commercial acumen and government exposure to the fore.
