Barnet Council has some of the best schools with over 95% rated as good or outstanding, over 200 parks, and a commitment to improving air quality by planting trees and rolling out electric charging points.
Their diverse communities and active voluntary sector are celebrated, and they are building housing and facilities that will benefit the whole borough. Barnet delivers services in-house, through partnerships with other public bodies and private sector partners.
We were initially approached to recruit a Deputy Director of Finance towards the end of 2017. On the back of the success of this we were asked to run a large campaign at the end of 2019 after Barnet insourced their finance team from Capita.
The scale of the project was certainly a challenge, as we were tasked with 16 roles to recruit across a range of levels. There was also a concern around the reputation of the finance department from when it was run by Capita, putting prospective candidates off.
We worked closely with the Council to design a microsite and campaign focusing on change and transformation. We wanted to emphasize the prospect of joining and contributing to a new culture within finance and to develop a high performing team. We approached up and coming individuals at all levels, some whom we have been tracking for a number of years, who were excited about the opportunity to have a huge impact on Barnet, in turn leaving a positive mark on the community.
We recruited two Assistant Directors of Finance, four Heads of Finance and ten Finance Managers. The majority of candidates came from our network. Notably a number of the Finance Managers were people we had head hunted from graduate schemes over the last couple of years, or had attended Allen Lane mentoring events.
