Day in the life of Simon Winter

Meet Simon, Business Manager – Local Government – Finance.

Discover more about a day in the life of Simon Winter – where he talks about what he finds incredibly rewarding in his role.

        A typical day for Simon

The first thing I do is check my emails and make sure that I am on top of any messages from candidates or clients. I then check any job advert responses and call suitable candidates. This is an opportunity for me to get to know candidates better, their aims and objectives and motivations. If they have the relevant experience, I will then book them into meet me for a candidate interview. At Allen Lane we feel it is really important to meet all of our candidates and we take pride in our candidates relationships and this is the start of their journey with Allen Lane so it is paramount we meet.  I will then spend some time sourcing potential candidates on the job boards. The local government finance market is quite niche with a small candidate pool so it is important that we spend time every day building out talent pool.

The rest of the day I spend calling clients or in candidate or client meetings, either face 2 face or over teams. Recruitment is a relationship driven business so meeting people is a key part of the job. Also, it is important that we are proactive with helping our candidates find jobs so I will often speak to clients to see if they are recruiting at the moment or have any opportunities on the horizon.

The latter part of the day will often end like the start, engaging in calls with candidates and also doing any necessary administration or compliance that needs to be done to assure candidates can start work in line with our client expectations.

My favourite part of the job

My favourite part of the job is placing candidates in jobs. I still get a tremendous amount of satisfaction even after many years in the recruitment industry. I also find it massively rewarding when candidates and clients make a good match, candidates are happy that they have secured a new role and clients feel they have the best person for their job.

        Best benefit

Flexible working. I live in the South West so I work from home most of the time. I have to be incredibly focused and motivated but my Manager makes a lot of effort to make sure that I feel supported and, even though I am only in the office a couple of times a month, still a big part of the team. I also have a lot of freedom to manage my desk the way I like, my manager and team know I work hard so the respect they give me to manage my work load the way I see fit is fantastic.

What motivates you at Allen Lane

I have always been a very driven recruiter with customer service at the core of what I do. I feel that I work with an incredible team of recruiters that have decades of recruitment and industry knowledge. We all share similar values with relationships at the core of what we do. This motivates me to work hard and the rewards we get for this hard work are industry leading

        I love Allen Lane because…

Allen Lane has a fantastic reputation, people are happy to speak to us and it makes me proud to work for a business that is so well thought of in the Local Government finance market.

Why do you choose to stay at Allen Lane?

A large part of why I choose to stay at Allen Lane is the team around me. We have a great bunch of people who are very successful but there are no big egos and every one is happy to support and help each other when needed.

What’s the best piece of advice you could give to a recruiter thinking of joining Allen Lane?

Be prepared to work hard and you will see the results. Allen Lane has a fantastic reputation based on the quality of their relationships so be prepared to work hard to build and maintain those relationships and in return you will be given lots of opportunities to succeed.
